Walking School Bus St Heliers Schools first ever Walking School Bus walked into school on Monday 20th March 2006. The PTA initiative, supported by Auckland City Council, aims at providing a safe and fun way for kids to walk to school, all under the watchful eye of parent drivers and conductors.
The Caterpillars Route runs down Maskell Street and has a regular passenger list who join the bus at Bus Stops convenient to them.
The Bumblebees Route starts on St Heliers Bay Road, opposite Grampian Road, and progresses up towards school, stopping at Ashby Ave and Summerhill Place.
Join us If you and your child are interested in joining one of the excisting routes, please contact our Walking School Bus Co-ordinator.
In order to get more routes up and running we require a route coordinator for each new route who will assist in the set up and arrange the day to day operation of the route. In addition bus drivers are required each day to walk with the children.
This means that we need you to volunteer to drive the bus on a regular basis if you want to enroll you child(ren).
For the Bus Drivers time commitment is minimal and the benefits are worth the efforts. The children get to walk to school in a safe and fun environment, whilst learning independence and the importance of road safety and getting fresh air and exercise. You on the other hand may only have to walk the bus once or twice a week and the rest of the time can wave them safely off at the nearest bus stop and pop home for a coffee.
